Hamilton was born in Philadelphia but studied at the Royal Academy in London, in Antwerp and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He eventually returned to the United States in 1875. He was awarded many prizes in Europe and his work hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London. His work consists mainly of portraits.
